What my leftover cheesecake has to do with your wardrobe.

I always eat leftovers. I'll grumpily finish something that I don't want to eat because I refuse to waste food.

While this sounds like it's better for the planet, it's not so good for my bloodsugar or my health if the leftovers are cheesecake.

Yes, yes, I know what you're thinking - don't buy the cheesecake. That's all very well, but what if someone gave me the damn thing? I still can't throw it out.

My psychic friend told me cheerfully that it's because I starved to death in the Irish potato famine back in 1846. Whether you believe her or not (I'm in two minds), don't get between me and a buffet.

Segue to your wardrobe. My determination to finish every last bite is a variation of the sunk cost fallacy. What's that, you say? It's when you aren't wearing that $380 dress but refuse to let it go because of the cost.

Please don't keep something just because you spent money on it. I'll find something else to do with the cheesecake if you let go of that jacket you bought that you don't really like and cant return.

Holding on to it simply keeps you stuck in the past and it blocks energy. You feel lousy every time you look at it because of the "wasted money." It wasn't wasted. Someone was employed, money flowed, others were helped because you bought it. You contributed.

Yes, you could sell it, but sometimes it's more freeing to simply give it away. It's unlikely you'll get back the money you paid for it. Check online to see what it's selling for right now. If it's worth your time and energy, then list or to take it to a consignment store - but if you'd rather be doing something else, like walking the dog or dancing, do that instead.

Do recycle, upcycle, donate - there is only so much that I can do with leftover dessert (it won't help the critters who live around me if I toss it off the deck) but you have more choices. One is to only wear clothes you love today.

There are no mistakes. That was you then, this is you now.
And you are awesome.
